Deena Metzger studied elephants.

Elephants have enormous intelligence, an ability to communicate across vast distances, and a complexity of their kinship networks and mourning rituals that is hard to fathom.

Deena Metzger wanted to hold council with the elephants.

“How does one sit in council with elephants?” her husband asked.

“I don’t know,” she answered. “I do not even know how to imagine it.”

But she went to Botswana with a guide. They traveled into the brush. And here’s what happened:

I am taking care of my mom who has end stage dementia. I was taken away from her at age 4 for bad reasons. Met up when I was 19. After one day we did not click. Over the years we met up a few times and she always had an excuse why she did not want me around. So 15 years later I am taking care of her and she has become physically abusive towards me. But I won't hit her back. She calls me name's and tells me to get out. I am here 24/7 and I have had 2 meltdowns.
