It takes courage to push yourself to places you have never been before, to test your limits and your breakthrough barriers. May you be blessed with pluck and valor, daring and audacity, fearlessness and fortitude to bravely take chances that lead you to know that life is one exciting discovery after another.

Why I Have a Problem With Blessing Bags for the Homeless

"I know that the intention behind them is good, but it’s dehumanizing because it implies...that giving and kindness are conditional – people can’t just simply give for the sake of giving. They want to make sure what they give falls under some arbitrary 'acceptable use' policy."
Lily A. Rayne

So there’s been this idea going around for a while of “Blessing Bags” where people fill Ziploc bags with travel-sized toiletries, snacks, and whatever else, meant to be passed out to homeless people as an act of kindness. An old story tells of a great spiritual teacher coming to a house of worship and turning back at the door, unable to enter. "Too many prayers inside." He said.

"Master," asked his disciples, "surely a room full of prayer is a good thing?"

"But all the prayers are stuck there in the building," the teacher answered. "None of them are going up to Heaven."

You might get this feeling today. You may be asking God for help or giving praise and thanks, yet somehow the prayer has no wings. You feel uninspired. Maybe you've known the peace that can sometimes follow prayer. Maybe there was a time when you prayed and your heart sang, your belly gurgled, and your toes curled under. If you've been blessed with such an experience, then you may have some sense of what the teacher meant. Sometimes prayer transforms you, and sometimes not. Keep trying.

"I set God before me always"
Psalm 16:8
