Â
A man was carrying a $100 bill shortly before the Sabbath. Knowing he could not carry money on the Sabbath and wanting to hide it safely, he placed the $100 inside a Bible on the page containing the Ten Commandments—specifically where it
says, “Thou shalt not steal.”
Â
He hid this book on a shelf and began to observe the Sabbath as was his custom.
Â
After the
Sabbath, he returned to retrieve his money. He opened the Bible to the Ten Commandments, only to find the $100 bill was gone.Â
Â
He searched frantically for the lost bill, shaking the Bible and rifling through the pages. Lo and behold, he found a $50 bill instead.
Â
There was a note attached. “I need this more than you do. Do unto others as you would have them do to you.”
Â
The man realized that the “theft” was done out of
desperation. He took the remaining $50 bill and gave it to charity, now fully understanding the true meaning of the commandment against stealing.Â
