There was a man in town, they called him Schlmeil, which means one having no luck.Â
Â
He wasn’t a real bright guy to begin with, and he never seemed to be able to do anything right.
Â
Yet, despite all that, he won the big lottery.
Â
When the townspeople heard, they gathered around him.
Â
"Tell us, what’s the secret of your success? You’ve never been a lucky person. You’re not a great intellectual. How did you figure out which numbers to play?"
Â
Schlmeil
explained. "There are 24 hours a day, and 365 days of the year. I multiplied the two numbers and put my money on that number, and I’m a winner!"
Â
"But the winning number was not equal to 24×365, which would be 8,760; it was 8759, one number off," said one of the men in the crowd.Â
Â
"Ah, yes!" said Schlmeil. "You all know I'm not so smart as to multiply correctly. That's how I finally got lucky!"
Â
And from that day
on, when his ineptitude came in handy, and his luck turned around, the lottery winner was re-named Schlmazel, which means one having good fortune, or some would say good luck.
Â
After all, what's in a name, when God and chance are on your side?!!
