DON'T CRY FOR ME
They were an elderly couple, very much in love until their dying days.
The husband was an important man. He was a wise man. He was a compassionate man. The people in his community came to him with their problems, asking for advice
and counsel. He solved disputes, spoke kindly, and he was responsive to each and every person who came to him with their request.
The wife was a homemaker. She made sure her husband always had everything he needed after the long days of public service. The house
was spotless, a hot meal was ready on the stove, and she made certain that he never walked into anything but a calm and soothing household.
When the old woman’s health began to fade, she hired a caregiver to help her. She made certain there was no break in the
routine the couple had enjoyed for over seventy years of a very happy marriage.
When the dear woman passed away, the caregiver was inconsolable. As his nature was to help people the old man spoke to the young woman.
“Don’t cry.” He said. “My wife is in heaven with God and the angels.”
“I’m not crying for her.” She answered between tears.
“I cry for you. Every night, for all these years, I watch a divine transformation take place. You walk in stooped shoulders, with sighs in your breath, and the weight of the world on your shoulders.
And yet, with a simple greeting from your beloved, I see your body straighten, your eyes regain their sparkle, and your essence comes alive once more.
I am crying for you, kind sir. I imagine your life is now quite
changed.”
He answered her gently. “Dear girl. Do not weep for me. My wife is with me always. God gave us to each other and God did not take away my beloved soulmate. She is with me in spirit, in precious memories, and in my heart.
I don’t need your tears. I need you to share my joy and to learn from her legacy.”
The words of the wise man touched the caregiver to her core. She was blessed with a living example of God’s love at work in people who love people, and people in love with God.
